TURKEY POINT
| The Turkey Point Lighthouse is located at the
head of the Chesapeake Bay on the tip of the Elk Neck Peninsula. The
35-foot masonry structure stands on the top of the 100-foot high bluff
and has served as a navigational aid for the Elk, North East and
Susquehanna Rivers of Maryland and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.
Turkey Point is one of the earliest lighthouses on the Chesapeake Bay having been built in 1833 by John Donahoo. A keeper's house, fog bell house and various barns and outbuildings once were located on the grounds. The lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard and is maintained by the Turkey Point Light Station, Inc. |
